We receive mercy and forgiveness from Jesus Christ through the sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Confession). It is a sacrament that involves confessing our sins to a priest, who by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders has authority from Jesus Christ to exercise the forgiveness of sins in His name. The sacrament of Reconciliation returns us to a proper relationship with the Lord and with fellow members of the Church.
While it is our Baptism that brings us into the family of God and introduces us to a life of grace, we need the sacrament of Reconciliation because of the struggle with sin that we experience throughout our lives. The sacrament is a vital part of the Lord's call within each of us to undergo a daily conversion. Our contrite heart recognizes the damage caused by sin and the need for healing from jesus. In receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, we are moved by grace to experience an interior repentance that expresses itself in a life reoriented toward Christ and away from sin.
It is necessary for us to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation whenever we are aware of having committed a mortal sin. We separate ourselves from God through mortal sin, which happens when we deliberately choose to commit a grave sin that we know is wrong. the sacrament restores us to a life of grace and allows us to join our fellow Catholics in receiving the Eucharist. If we are aware of having committed a mortal sin, we cannot receive the Eucharist until we receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.
